Who we are:
We are Tom and Dawn Steffes, and our 4 sons.
Where we are located:
We are located in East Central Indiana, north of Mooreland on a 45 acre farm. We are within 10 miles of Millville—the birthplace of Wilbur Wright, one of the two Wright Brothers.
How we grow our plants:
We start all these plants as seed, by hand, beginning in late February or early March. In late March / early April the plants are transplanted by hand into larger pots. What started out in 2007 as Dawn’s “project” has now transitioned into a family event.
Once transplanted, the plants go into a greenhouse on our property, and are grown with Espoma Organic Tomato Tone fertilizer. The plastics come from Landmark plastic Company in Ohio and are #6 (recyclable).
We then take the plants to market. We only sell what we start from seed, so if it is at our booth, you can be sure we were involved in its growth and production. All the work is completed on our farm by our family. These jobs are local, and the plants are being sold within 35 miles of our business.
How we raise our Cattle:
Every cow, heifer, and steer in our herd have been bred, born and raised on our farm. This allows us to not only know our cattle, but to also keep them healthy by not introducing pathogens from other farms onto ours.
Our cattle also know and trust us. Calmer cattle leads to more tender beef. Even our youngest son can walk out to the pasture and they will follow him. It is not uncommon for him to feed them vegetable scraps right out of his hand. Because we utilize intensive rotational grazing as a management practice, our cattle know that when we walk out to the pasture and towards another section we are likely moving them to fresh grass. We walk among them, we don't use tractors or 4 wheelers to drive them, they follow us like puppy dogs, and they also come when we call. :)
To raise high-quality garden plants and animals in a healthy, humane, natural, and sustainable manner that helps to "tend" to the Earth, and "keep" our customers satisfied.
